How much does it cost to build a mobile app?
Between $15,000 and $500,000 or more. A simple app with a handful of screens and no complicated logic sits near the bottom. A funded first version for a US or European startup usually lands between $80,000 and $250,000. An app with artificial intelligence features, heavy security requirements or many outside connections goes past $500,000.
Those figures come from GoodFirms' 2026 survey of 267 app development companies and from Business of Apps' 2026 analysis. They are real, and on their own they are close to useless, because the gap between the floor and the ceiling is bigger than most companies' entire annual budget.
The useful version of the answer is a sum you can do yourself. Every app development cost in the world is the same calculation:
Hours of work × hourly rate = price.
That is it. Everything else in this article is about estimating those two numbers honestly.
Why is the app development cost range so wide?
App development cost varies so much because "an app" describes two completely different things. A restaurant menu app that shows information and takes a booking is a few weeks of work. A banking app that moves money, verifies identity, works offline and satisfies a regulator is a year of work for a team.
Both are apps. Both appear in the same published range. That is why the range is 33 times wide.
Three plain-language terms worth knowing before you read a quote, because they are where quotes differ most:
- MVP stands for minimum viable product. It means the smallest version of your app that a real customer would actually use. It is not a demo or a prototype.
- Native means building separately for iPhone and Android, in each platform's own language. Two builds, better performance, more hours.
- Cross-platform means writing the app once so it runs on both, using a framework such as Flutter or React Native. Fewer hours, and for most business apps the difference in quality is not noticeable to users.
A quote for a native MVP and a quote for a cross-platform MVP can differ by 40% for the same feature list. If two agencies give you very different numbers, ask which they have assumed before you assume one of them is overcharging.
What decides app development cost?
App development cost is decided by five things, in descending order of impact.
1. How many screens. A screen is one view a user sees: a login page, a dashboard, a settings page. Screen count is the closest thing to a reliable size measure a non-technical person can count.
2. How many integrations. An integration is a connection to another system, such as a payment provider, a mapping service, or your existing customer database. Each one costs hours and each one can break later. Integrations are the most commonly underestimated line in any quote.
3. Whether you need a backend. The backend is the part of the software users never see: the servers, the database and the logic behind the screens. An app that only displays information may not need one. An app with accounts, saved data or anything shared between users does.
4. Compliance requirements. If your app handles health records, payment card data or children's data, it has to meet specific rules. Building to those rules from the start is more expensive than building without them, and vastly cheaper than retrofitting them.
5. Who builds it and where. Covered in its own section below, because it moves the number more than most founders expect and less than the cheapest quote implies.
Notice what is not on this list: the design of the icon, the name of the app, and how excited you are about the idea. Those genuinely do not change the price.
Work out your own number in ten minutes
You need a pen, your feature list, and no meetings. This gives you an estimate accurate enough to plan with, and accurate enough to spot a quote that is out by a factor of three.
Step 1. Count your screens
List every distinct view a user will see. Login, sign-up, home, list, detail, profile, settings, and so on. Be honest and include the boring ones. Most business apps land between 10 and 25.
Step 2. Count your integrations
List every outside system the app must talk to. Payments, maps, email, your CRM, your accounting tool. Most first versions have two to five.
Step 3. Turn those into hours
These are planning multipliers, not quotes. They are deliberately round.

Add up your total. Then add:
- Testing: 25% of that total. This is the work of finding and fixing what is broken before customers do.
- Project management: 15% of that total. Someone has to run it.
Step 4. Multiply by an hourly rate
Use the band that matches where you intend to hire, from the regional section below.
Step 5. Add the scope-change multiplier
Multiply the whole thing by 1.2 to 1.4. This covers the changes you will ask for once you see the app working, which you will, because everybody does. A quote that has no allowance for this is not cheaper. It is just going to be wrong later.

Do this before you take a single sales call. If a quote comes back at three times your estimate, ask which of your five inputs they scoped differently. Usually it is integrations.

Does where you hire change the price?
Yes. Location moves app development cost by roughly five times, and it is the biggest single factor you control. Hourly rates run from around $24 in South and Southeast Asia to $250 or more in North America (Accelerance and GoodFirms, 2026). Two honest cautions on the cheap end. A low hourly rate multiplied by twice the hours is not a saving, and the difference between a competent and an inexperienced team shows up in hours, not in the rate card. And an eight to twelve hour timezone gap means a question asked at 4pm gets answered tomorrow, which is fine for a defined build and painful for a project still deciding what it is.
The reverse is also true. Paying $150 an hour does not buy correctness. It buys proximity.
What are the costs nobody quotes you?
Here is the strange thing about app development cost. The numbers every guide publishes with confidence, the build ranges, are the ones nobody can know without your feature list. The numbers that are genuinely exact and checkable barely get mentioned.
These are exact.
Apple Developer Program: $99 per year. You cannot publish to the App Store without it, and it renews annually. The Apple Developer Enterprise Program, for internal-only apps, is $299 a year.
Google Play developer account: $25, once. A single payment for the life of the account, no renewal.
Store commission: 15% or 30%. Both Apple and Google take a cut of digital purchases made inside your app. It is 15% while you earn under $1 million a year and 30% above that. Free apps that sell nothing digital pay no commission. Google charges 15% on subscriptions from day one. Apple drops to 15% on a subscriber's second year and beyond.

Then the ones that are predictable but not fixed:
- Cloud hosting. Typically $50 to $500 a month for a young business app, rising with usage.
- Forced operating system updates. Apple and Google set deadlines requiring apps to be rebuilt against newer developer toolkits. Miss the deadline and you cannot ship updates. This is work you did not ask for and cannot decline.
- Maintenance. Budget 15% to 20% of the original build cost per year. Apps are not furniture. They need fixing.
- Compliance work. Building to health, payment or children's data rules adds meaningfully to a build. Retrofitting them costs several times more.
- Getting people to use it. Not a development cost, but the line that most often goes unbudgeted entirely.

The build is 60% of the three-year total. Store fees, the ones every guide mentions and nobody quantifies, come to $322, or 0.4%. Maintenance is the line that matters and it is the line least often written into a plan.

That first cell is worth sitting with. A meaningful share of the people searching for app development costs do not need a custom app at all. Check the no-code route before you brief anyone, and if a template does 90% of what you need, take the template.
What to check before signing any app contract
- Who owns the code? Get it in writing. If the contract does not say you own it, you may not.
- What happens at handover? Ask for the code repository, the documentation and the accounts, not a finished file.
- Are the people in the pitch the people building it? Ask directly, and ask whether any work is subcontracted.
- What is the change process? Every project has changes. Ask how they are priced before you need one.
- What does maintenance cost after launch? Get the annual figure before you sign the build.
What most teams get wrong about app budgets
Budgeting for the build and not the three years. App development cost is usually planned as a single invoice. As the table above shows, the launch invoice is roughly 60% of the three-year cost. A plan that stops at launch is short by nearly half.
Treating the quote as the price. A quote prices the scope you described. The scope will change, because seeing a working app changes your mind about it. Budget 20% to 40% on top from the start and you will not have an awkward conversation in month three.
Underestimating integrations. People count screens accurately and integrations optimistically. Connecting to a modern, well-documented service is straightforward. Connecting to a fifteen-year-old internal system with no documentation can cost more than the rest of the app.
Buying the cheapest hourly rate. The rate is not the cost. The cost is rate multiplied by hours, and an inexperienced team uses more hours, then more again fixing what they got wrong. The cheapest quote and the cheapest project are frequently different projects.
Building both platforms on day one. You can launch on one platform, learn whether anyone wants the app, and add the second later. Doing both at once because it feels complete is how first versions get expensive before they have any evidence behind them.
Nobody owns it after launch. An app with no named maintainer breaks quietly, usually when a phone operating system updates. The person who pays for this is whoever signed the original budget, because the fix arrives as an unplanned invoice.
